Most words have no necessary relationship to their meanings. There is nothing inherently canine about the word dog, which is why other languages can use entirely different labels for the same animal. Why does the match feel so natural? Saying bouba involves rounded lips and flowing sounds, while kiki contains abrupt consonants and a high, narrow vowel. Those physical and acoustic qualities resemble the visual characteristics of the corresponding shapes.

Useful qualities to consider include:

Language Is Both Arbitrary and Embodied

Sound symbolism does not prove that every word contains a hidden natural meaning. Most vocabulary still depends on shared convention, historical change, borrowing, and cultural agreement. Language needs arbitrariness because humans must name abstract concepts that have no obvious sound, shape, or texture.

What sound symbolism shows is that arbitrariness is not the whole story. Speech is produced by a moving body, heard by a sensory brain, and interpreted through patterns learned from the surrounding world.
